The response of a brain tumor to treatment may not be immediately apparent. A series of scans may be required to determine whether the tumor is growing. The changes that are seen on a brain scan after surgery can resemble residual tumor, and the swelling that occurs in response to the surgery can be identical in appearance to that caused by a tumor. Serial scans are performed with the goal of detecting a recurrent tumor early.
